Just curious how many people actually think this is not true.

If you didn't see this coming, you don't understand the Court. It's a simple extension of Anthony Kennedy's Chief Justiceship. Roberts believes the Court is the final institution that can at least pretend to be nonpartisan and deserves to be uncompromised in the eyes of the voting public.

The court is obviously nakedly partisan, and he's a fool for thinking he can try to keep it "apolitical." This is a conservative failing because any liberal Chief justice would not entertain the idea of straying from their voting bloc. They would see it as a chance to change the law in their favor.

Conservatives care more about institutions (protecting the idea of the neutral Court) than power (ruling with the originalist justices) because they think it helps protect their ideals. Leftists care more about power than institutions because our American institutions are inherently limiting in their design.

This will happen to the next conservative Chief Justice, and the next. It's the nature of things.
