I need a permit for firearms, but the permit is easy to get - comparable to a driving license (unless we are talking about military-grade full auto weapons, which is indeed hard, but not impossible, to get). In fact, firearms are very popular here, even among girls.
Regarding knives, I can carry anything I can dream of, including large swords and katanas, anywhere I want to, except to airports and similar places, and I do not need any permit. In fact, we still teach our children, especially boys, to carry a knife all the time. My EDC knife is ESEE 6, a great six-inch blade made in the USA, I have it everywhere, even at the office.
