That polarization and dysfunction occurred before the 21st Century. I saw this erupt during the Clinton impeachment hearings. This wasn't the start of this polarization, but the impeachment process highlighted the left and right divide... Which existed even before then.
There wasn't enough votes in the Senate to convict. Back then, as now, the Democrats disregarded the facts. I remember a younger, spirited, Jerry Nadler arguing against impeachment... And saying the same things that Republicans said in defense of President Trump. This is the same Jerry Nadler that contradicted the younger Jerry Nadler to push the Trump impeachment.
I read a book in the 2000s that talked about Bill Clinton's China connections... Including an account where a Chinese official donated to Clinton's re-election campaign saying, "We like your president, we hope he wins." This guy was either the same guy, or was working for the guy, that implied that a nuclear bomb could hit Los Angeles... In response to our sending to aircraft carriers to Taiwan to force the PLA to back down.
