First and foremost is the building itself. Know that the area is under constant renovation so while the building itself might be the same, the area around it might look different than you last saw it in person or in pictures/videos that were made months or years ago. Generally during protests you can count on barriers and riot police forming barricades at strategic points, so don't expect to simply walk up to the front of the building and shout into the senator's ears.

As discussed in several threads already, D.C. has some nasty roadmaps that force you to enter or exit the area from one of very few routes. Refer to this thread and several comments in it for more information:

If any D.C. pedes have information on what the place is like during heavy police activity please let us know. By no means do I carry any special knowledge I just did basic research on what it's gonna be like out there. My current fear is that people may have trouble safely reaching the site and more importantly, when the event drags into the night you will have to return to your spots in the dark. I don't want anyone to get lost and I don't want people getting mugged or shot in a dark alley. Keep in this consideration when selecting your spot, it isn't

My suggestion is that we form information kiosks at the event and have a few volunteers, preferably locals, who can guide people to and from important resources.

One last resource I'll provide you all with is this crime statistics map:

https://dcatlas.dcgis.dc.gov/crimecards/all:crimes/all:weapons/2:months/citywide:heat

This is not meant to discourage you at all, it's meant to inform you of what places you need to be alert at all times. From this map alone you can tell where the best lodging deals will be found. Feel free to share any all information about D.C. in general here as well.

Also be aware the area is extensively closed to vehicle traffic as detailed by OMBOMB's link: https://archive.is/M3ua3

Even a mile out you'll have trouble finding parking spots. This also means you shouldn't expect Uber/Lift services to drop you off anywhere near the capital, finding a ride will also require extensive treks. If you still have time by all means do a little training before heading out, long walks required after long periods of standing still can be rough. I went through something like that recently and you need to take regular breaks, PACE YOURSELF. The park for example is a great place to lie down or even take a nap. Limiting the supplies you carry may be of interest here, unless of course you tent up like some have mentioned they plan on doing. A very light quality sleeping bag or electric blanket may be valuable when things head into the evening.

Important distinction to make that this is for vehicles. It reinforce the issue that people will have to walk from further out than most think, so either expect to walk long distances of more than a mile out, or use public transportation. Use the crime map I posted to know where to not be alone at night.
