The only main difference between a libertarian and a typical Republican is a libertarian believes in absolute liberty without any regulation. We both believe in free market economy , we both believe in a small and limited government , we both believe in fiscal economic conservatism , we both believe in independent self reliance, we both believe capitalism. The difference traditionally have been that the Republicans have been part of the deep state ruling class establishment where Libertarians have been opposed to the deep state establishment from the start. You Trump republicans are just now catching up to what us libertarians have known and been dealing with.
One other distinction is the not everybody but a healthy majority of traditional republicans believe the government should regulate morality and use Biblical Judeo Christian dogma in regulation and in arbitrary laws. Where us libertarians believe governments roles should be limited in that area.
People say Libertarians just want to smoke weed. Well its more complex that that. I don't smoke weed but if I did i wouldn't want to be ripped out of my house in the middle of the night , torn away from my family , have my children taken from me and locked up in prison and fined and punished for something that is none of the governments business. It's not that we all want to smoke weed, its just that we want to have the right to if we chose to.
