Hopefully their selfishness aligns with our needs.

This is how well designed government works. Nobody assumes beautiful motives on the part of mere human beings; the Constitution just builds in failsafes which let others check them, or makes it more appealing to do the right thing.

Alas, the courts and congress have slowly eroded many of these safeguards, so that now we’re in this bad situation.
