VA police are nazis when it comes to the speed limit. Don't worry, you'll likely be sitting in bumper to bumper traffic a lot too.

I would rather drive in a Turkish demolition derby than through Virginia.

Don't bring a radar detector either, they are illegal.

Eats_Ass 3 points ago +3 / -0

That shit's insane. Same in CA iirc.

It's amazing to me that having a radio receiver can be "illegal".

California didn't ban radar detectors, they made it illegal to mount one on your windshield. This means either use it less effectively below the window or get a wired in system.

zooty 2 points ago +2 / -0

Not in CA but I had one that had the detectors at the front and back with just a small indicator by the steering wheel. Quite nice and keeps from annoying the popo.

Just to add:

Detectors are illegal in both VA and D.C.

If you need a detector to get to D.C. before you cross the VA border, remove it and the windshield mount. Store all of it including the power cord in a container in the back seat if you are mobile or preferably in the trunk if you stop before crossing the border.

A couple of years back, possession wasn't an issue as long as it was not in use and not usable. Out of the driver's reach was unusable. There are Internet rumors about people having issues with the power cord being left plugged in even if not connected to a at the other end.

VA Police could confiscate the detector from you on the spot as collateral to ensure you showed up and/or paid the ticket, but there was a separate process for recovering your property.

Work Arounds
Waze and/or the Escort Radar App (w/o your detector) may provide some road information. Google owns Waze and some of their reports make it on to the traffic layer of Google Maps.

Speed Trap? Faded memory, but NC into VA there's a mile just over the border in VA where the speed limit drops from 75 or 70 in NC to 55 in VA around a corner. When you get around it there's often a half a dozen cruisers waiting for you to make a donation to state coffers.

I can attest to this. I was admiring a beautiful sight of nature (stupidly not paying attention to speed) while driving downhill and my speed surpassed 90 mph. A state trooper got me for reckless driving and I immediately got 10 letters in the mail from lawyers. It’s a fucking racket. I had to hire an attorney to get it reduced.

SauronWasFramed 5 points ago +5 / -0

Also, when traveling out of state, your out of state car tag is an immediate target for tickets. Out of staters have no voice when they complain about getting moving violations.

2
Kraznaya 2 points ago +3 / -1

Going 80mph in VA is a felony offense. You're gonna wanna fight that one.

2
FightForTrump 2 points ago +2 / -0

It’s not a felony, please don’t spread false information it makes us all look bad

1
Kraznaya 1 point ago +1 / -0

It was a felony, I know because I was charged with it, but I see that it has since been changed.

This is true.

VA is indeed known for speed traps too if I recall correctly.

Most notable speed trap areas for out of towners to be aware of are

I-81, from the NC border up to Staunton.

I-95, from the NC border through Emporia.

Hands free law just went into effect on Jan 1 also

Going south on I-77 in VA. Cops are out!

2
mrdaqist 2 points ago +4 / -2

I agree dont speed. However "Automatic arrest for criminal misdemeanor" this is not correct.

11
Jabblemonkey1 11 points ago +11 / -0

It is considered reckless driving in Virginia to exceed the posted speed limit by more than 20 MPH, or to drive at a speed greater than 85 MPH.

Sauce: Drive through Virginia frequently, see the damn signs up and down the interstate.

Edit: speed considered reckless driving in VA is 85 MPH, not 80 MPH.

FRONT_TOWARD_LEFT 7 points ago +7 / -0

It is not automatic. Whoever pulls you over has discretion for writing up a reckless driving charge, and that cuts both ways.

If it's an oath-breaking jackbooter who clocked you and doesn't like that you are MAGA, then he can ruin your week by taking you in for booking and having your car towed to an impound lot at your highly inflated expense even if the magistrate decides not to charge you with reckless.

This power imbalance is very real, and there is about jack and shit that anyone can do about it.

3
SteelMongoose 3 points ago +3 / -0

Except for maybe drive way under 80 mph?

2
FRONT_TOWARD_LEFT 2 points ago +2 / -0

I agree with you, and I keep it under the limit or go with the flow of traffic.

4
SteelMongoose 4 points ago +4 / -0

Yeah, there's no point in making trouble on the way to DC. Well want everyone there when the show starts. Godspeed.

xopi 0 points ago +1 / -1

Until some pig decides to make your life hell, lies, and does all this stuff anyways.

We need to be like the founding fathers. They didn't stop for checkpoints. They weren't nice to crown authority. They just shot them.

0
SteelMongoose 0 points ago +1 / -1

You're not that interesting. Just drive the speed limit.

1
xopi 1 point ago +1 / -0

You've obviously never had the police beat the ever living shit out of you for absolutely no reason.

The only good cop is a dead cop. Back the blue went out the window when you haven't had full range of motion on one of your legs in over 20 years. It sickened me seeing so many back the blue posts in the early days of this board. I'm glad you guys finally came around. My only crime was being a 15 year old kid running around my own neighborhood.

Cops can and will make up shit. None of those 3 assholes faced any justice. No report. It just never happened. If I could figure out who those 3 assholes were today, i would dedicate the rest of my life to paralyzing from the neck down all of their children and grandchildren like they almost did to me, and would have done to me unless some random good neighbor came outside and started screaming.

Many states. Have the same law. Just stay 5 over and you’ll be fine.

I had a coworker written up, suspended without pay for a week, and cited for the speeding violation for driving like that in a patrol car. He was caught because a state trooper and someone from our agency wanted to know why he was running code when nothing seemed to be going on.

We all agreed he had it coming, and the collective bargaining unit wouldn't touch it.

56 in a 55? I'm relieved that they got to you before you killed someone. Seriously, though, I rarely cited below +15 over posted speed unless conditions were particularly hazardous.

There were times when I ran Code 2 1/2 to get close to something that might go bad, but it's smarter to either run with lights or not. If you're not running code and you crash moving well over posted speed, you'll have some awkward questions coming.

All that said, police departments differ pretty widely. I liked my agency and its ethical standards. We usually got rid of problem children before they became headlines. If you crossed a line, the expectation was that you owned it and took your lumps. Mind you, that applied more to us grunts than to staff.

fponick 4 points ago +4 / -0

They are LOADED with speed cameras! It’s an important source of revenue! They even clock you if you don’t come to a complete stop before turning right on red. Happened to me! Found out a couple weeks later when the ticket with photo came in the mail!

1
grumpyhead 1 point ago +1 / -0

ohh yea we have those red light cams here in Norfolk area.... got me once .. sent me a 10 sec clip of me slowly making a right turn.. and a 50 dollar fine.. never again

Not if you’re driving in Virginia. And remember, that state was stolen for Biden, too!
