Different parenting philosophies. Spartans and Romans started training their kids for warfare at about age 6-8, and "old enough" to them was younger than it is now. Every parent has to weigh carefully whether exposure to experiences or shelter from those experiences is the best thing. Too much exposure, and you rob your kid of their childhood and put them in unnecessary risk. Too much shelter, and you rob your child of the ability to later practice self-sufficiency and sound judgement.
Some people truly feel that you gotta let your kid get out there and LIVE, and if he dies, then he was too weak or else God decided it was his time. Very Roman/Spartan.
