Except Booth wasn't a communist. He was a southern sympathizer. And he shot Lincoln because he didn't know that General Lee surrendered four days previous.

Actually he did know about General Lee’s surrender and even heard a speech from Abraham Lincoln only 2 days after the surrender talking about reuniting the confederate states and giving citizenship to some blacks. That speech made Booth angry and what inspired him to push through with an assassination plot after many kidnap plots falling through previously.
I don't know much about the history but how did Lincoln not have somebody guarding his booth? He didn't expect anything like this could be possible? Were security measures not really very tight back then? At least a guy standing outside with a pistol not allowing anyone in could've prevented JWB from doing what he did..
I don’t know what the security detail would have been like back then; but I do know Booth’s family had a respectable and prestigious name in the acting world at the time. John Wilkes Booth had actually done very well for himself as an actor throughout the civil war which why he was allowed to have special access to where President Lincoln was seated.
On April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was shot at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. He’d die the next morning.
But also on April 14, 1865, Lincoln signed into law a piece of legislation which created the Secret Service — the law enforcement agency charged with defending the President from, among other things, assassination attempts such as the one that befell Lincoln that evening.
