You know what? Universities are overrated. There are so many options towards a rewarding career most individuals don't know about. For example, if you are into I.T. you can easily take a short course and get some certifications, and jump right into an I.T. career without ever going to college. Same with many trade jobs, you can go into an apprenticeship program with an employer who will pay you to work for them as you learn and work towards becoming certified.
The number of positions in a society that requires a degree are actually quite low, bottom of the list low. I have friends that went from working on tanks in the army 2 Machining parts at Scripps Institute of oceanography in San Diego. And they did that with a PhD ( plane High School diploma) one of them is currently making $68 an hour to stand there and watch a machine run and take measurements.
This is the same story as me. I retired from the Army with a Bachelors's in Business Administration and found that I got a much better job and better pay in I.T. after a couple of months of school and obtaining a couple of certificates.
This is what we need to explain to our children before they become of age. That trades like HVAC, IT, Machinist, welders the list goes on are in higher demand then any degree they could receive true University and pay them well beyond what they receive with their degree, faster. Mike Rowe from Dirty Jobs has numerous degrees and you see what he does for a living.
