Related (not an argument the original post): There are tons of good alternatives for e-mail services, web browsers, and entertainment, but we still need a strong alternative for the Android-iOS duopoly. I can't quite decide which of the two is worse...
We need more pedes developing American-made technology and getting it into the market. Working on doing this myself (computer programmer), but it's tricky as you can imagine. Ordinary software is one thing, but new operating systems and getting manufacturers hooked in is a different animal entirely. I'm really hoping one of the things that comes out of 2020 fuckery is a massive wave of Made In America energy. I really do.
Everything you're talking about already exists and is being worked on. I don't personally run Linux, but am going to repurpose an old laptop to start learning. From what I can see, with a little effort, you can do email and web and most common tasks in Linux.
We have MX-Linux running on our desktop and laptop here at home. Have been using it for 3 years now. Wife and kids are able to get everything they need done. I still load win7 (unlicensed 😉) in VirtualBox occasionally to get videos off my iPhone or run software for which I cannot find a Linux equivalent, but those are very few and far between. I wish Apple would start supporting Linux :/
