It’s pretty infuriating watching them subvert public opinion solely to enrich themselves. I’m in a union and we’re always hyper focused on our service delivery, whereas the teachers union is just constantly bitching and threatening to strike if they don’t get their way. And their objective isn’t to provide a better service, it’s to protect themselves from any type of performance measurement while they take higher and higher benefit packages.

I understand completely why people dislike public unions.

That is because your private sector union has a mutual interest in keeping your company afloat. There is no such interest in public sector unions. They have no incentive to keep the quality of their labor high because their jobs will always be funded. Even FDR was strongly against public sector unions because of this.

I am a public union but I understand your point. We do have an interest in fiscal responsibility as our funds are from property taxes and any year could flip the budget on its head (see 2020). That being said there always seems to be more and more money in the federal budget for the teachers unions to milk out.

Alright well imagine that something like 2020 happens and your local gov decides it needs to cut teachers salaries to make the budget work. So the local teachers union goes on strike.

But who are they striking against? It isn’t the school system. It is we the people. We are the ones who elected the people that put that budget in place. That isn’t the case in a private sector. Which is why I say all public unions have to go.

Fair point. But just to clarify I cannot strike at all, not that I ever would even if I could. It’s against the law for me to go on strike.

I mean I know that to be false where I live because I see the budget where I am. Your property taxes are typically based off the value of your home, so if your home loses value the municipality has less money than it did the year prior.
