Here's a simple question...what does Chicago export that is valuable? Here's the top ten employers:
1 U.S. Government
2 Chicago Public Schools
3 City of Chicago
4 Cook County, Illinois
5 Advocate Health System
6 JPMorgan Chase
7 University of Chicago
8 State of Illinois
9 United Continental Holdings
10 AT&T Illinois
The federal, state, county and city governments all crack the top ten. They are all taxpayer funded - not productive. Public school system is also taxpayer funded. University of Chicago, Advocate Health System and AT&T are likely non-functional without taxpayer subsidy and provide services that would be much cheaper without the regulatory racket.
That leaves just JPMorgan Chase and a holdings company, both of which are indirectly subsidized by the government.
So in summary, u/beholdachair is correct. This is a map of parasitism vs productivity. Chicago's "wealth" comes from a mixture of people pushing paperwork around for the IRS and Marxist indoctrination camps.
You're not wrong that public sector jobs are heavy here. It's why the Dems have the power that they have here. But there's still plenty of people like me who provide real services and products to the city, the state, the country, and the world. So to just label all us as parasites is inaccurate.

This is true. Go to the gold coast and they are mega wealthy. Go 10 blocks down you start to see what's really going on.
