Legally, a firearm of any barrel length without a stock is a Pistol. If you attach a VFG then it legally becomes a Any Other Weapon if under 26" OAL (requiring a tax stamp) or a Firearm if over 26" (requiring NO stamp).

Typically, a 11.5" barrel is enough to make an AR15 a Firearm when a VFG is added, but you can also get there with a P&W on a 10.5", or a longer receiver extension, etc

There is a third classification everyone misses. A "Pistol" is any firearm with barrel under 16" and an overall length less than 26". A "Rifle" is any firearm with a barrel over 16" and exceeds 26" in overall length. A "Firearm" is any firearm with a barrel under 16" but with a length that exceeds 26". "Firearms" can legal have a vertical grip on them, but no stock.

So you’re telling me that my shotgun identifies as a rifle then? Good grief, first gender fluid now this. I can’t keep track of the goalposts.

Fun thought- What would happen if I lubricated my shotgun with gender fluid?

Shotguns are completely different area of what the fuck when it comes to laws. A shotguns length for above/bellow is 18" rather than a rifle's 16".

A shotgun with a less than 18" barrel and greater than 26" is also a "firearm"

Our laws are silly
