Every objective analytical analysis has shown that the 2 atomic bombs saved far more lives than they took, due to the tens of millions of Japanese people (civilian and military, but mostly civilian) on the mainland that were fanatically devoted to their god emperor, and all ready to fight to the death.
It saved Japanese lives in the final tally, and it sure as hell saved Allied lives.

Many years ago a friend had a co-worker who was an old Japanese woman. She claimed that when she was a kid she was taught how to drown people as they believed there was going to be a major assault from the sea. Being an island I suppose that's obvious. Different people were taught to do different things to defend Japan. If the lady was telling the truth they were prepared to sacrifice their kids to do it. My friend trusted her word for whatever worth that is.
Based on the voluminous statements by so many Japanese in the post-WWII decades that soon followed, there is no reason to doubt the veracity of what she said.
History is written by the winners, so it's no wonder the US tries to justify it by any means. The exact same reasoning can be used as an excuse for launching nuclear weapons in any major war.

De facto, if your statement was true, nuclear weapons would have been utilized in every major conflict since then, by a nuclear-armed power, and that has happened ZERO times, although, unfortunately, there have been plenty of major conflicts in which it may have been utilized as an option.
I support the use of those nukes. The alternative, an invasion of Japan, would have been many more dead. The Japanese were arming their civilians for an attack and telling them that they would be tortured and raped by Americans, and they would have fought to the death, women and children included. A million casualties, most of whom would have been civilians. In many ways, what the Japanese did was as bad or worse than the NAZIs. For whatever reason, their crimes were not focused on as much.
That being said, there is no shortage of crimes committed by Americans in war. That’s the nature of war. What happened to the German people after both great wars was an atrocity that went overlooked, and it has continued to this day as they are now forced to take refugees who never suffered because of the NAZI regime and in many cases did and still support the eradication of Jews.
