A way out. Graduated high school, poor, in a small town, going nowhere fast. Joining the military got me out of there and plan to do something besides get stuck in a town now plagued with meth and heroin.
Odds of dying as an average Air Force or Navy dude are pretty slim. A lot of Army and Marine MOSs are safe and chill too.
I wouldnt join today with the state of everything and it disappoints me that other young men and women wont consider that option. I've seen the military change a lot of peoples lives. Some discipline and a sense of purpose goes a long way in taking that kid from a shitty situation and turning them into a decent adult.
You can't fix stupid.. early chilhood nutrition and stimulation is pretty much the only measurable way to increase IQ.. Genetics pretty much determine your potential... If you parents have the right dna sequence and you get the right combination when the gamets do their thing...

The marines estimate only 7% have a combination of acceptable level of fitness and acceptable level of intelligence to serve in the marines.
Based on what I have seen of the younger generations, that seems about right.
It was no where near that bad when I served, but that was a long time ago.
