A G1 storm is minor. They happen pretty often. They'd lie and say it was something more severe if that was their plan.

Yep. A G1 storm has a planetary K index of 5 (average earth magnetic field disturbance of 50-85 nanoTesla).

It is the most minor storm that has a designation. Nowhere near dangerous or alarming.

Sincerely,

Your local based astrophysicist

I feel like this is post was made specifically for you

I think I am the only astrophysicist on this site, as far as I know. So you're probably right :)

Doubt that, the silent majority may include more astrophysicists. Probably all astrophysicists, after all, they are very smart.

I’ve always wondered why Uranus spins 90 degrees off it’s orbit. I’m thankful for cosmologists in general, and if you answer this I’ll build a little shrine to bless you, or something...

I was going to ask how a regular ol pede knows this stuff, then I saw your name

Lol yep. It's not exactly my subfield -- I study black holes and other compact objects, but I am friends with a few solar physicists so I get to hear them talk about things like this all the time.

Real cool stuff

But doesn't it have a stratospheric J index of 9.3 (triple the average lunar field disturbance at 175 microWestinghouses?

Sorry, I wanted to sound cool too.

TOP KEK

I think it's a J index of 69 with a lunar field disturbance of 420 MAGAwatts

this will be kp4 at worst. as bad as enlil spiral is, this thing isnt even close to a direct hit and its coming off a very minor flaring event. double or not.

You are correct about the storm, however they can always claim it's a G1 now, then say "Oh, shit it was actually a G3! My bad! Twitter and Google servers won't reboot for some reason, that's weird right?"

I'm allowed to dream

I'll let y'all know if something big is going to happen.

Unfortunately, people are retarded, we all know that that can't tell an event like this any differently than they can tell cold/flu season apart from the coof. They couldn't tell a Carrington Event from static cling on the clothes in their dryer.

LessAndLessIronic 8 points ago +8 / -0

I mean, the Carington is the one where the dryer turns off and you can't get it to turn on for a decade and then everyone you have ever loved starves to death.

Though I suppose most won't believe to real because there will be no TV to fact check it for them.
