Depends on the strength of the eruption. Light takes 8 minutes but solar particles don't travel anywhere near the speed of light. A strong X class flare can make it in 1/2 a day but weaker bursts travel slower. This particular eruption is very weak so the energy isn't moving fast at all. The news is bullshit also. A G1 can't cause a blackout.
