We arrived this afternoon under cloud cover and about 45°. Came from Florida. We drove final leg of trip today. The closer we got to DC the better the traffic. While very heavy, we rarely fell under speed limit.
Our GPS showed road closures, but the minor detours were seamless and never slowed us down. We are used to bad traffic, and yet I needed to give turn directions because they were multiple turns with mere seconds from one turn to the next. It was thrilling.😅😲
We are snug in our hotel which is .9 mile from Freedom Plaza. (Please don't ask where.)
Concierge said the walk around here is "very safe, even the homeless don't bother people." (Mini tent city.)
We received a short list of dine-in eateries, Whole Foods and Farmers Market, all nearby and open, but still suggest calling ahead.
We're surprised at all the mask wearing, coming from Florida, an "open" state. People wear them walking outside alone. I noticed many women walking alone.
Capitol police are directing traffic. Concierge said our hotel will receive 100 National Guard guests tomorrow. 👮👮👮👮👮
Local news on TV showed DC Mayor telling residents to "avoid the mall on January 5&6, due to pro-Trump protestors."
Capitol Police spokesperson reported "we heard rumors that some protestors bringing firearms to protest." He said "firearms not permitted," and showed a sign that said no firearms allowed within 1000 feet of Freedom Plaza. Warned about "Capitol Police will be out enforcing the law.; 500 National Guard will be UNarmed and will be doing traffic 🚦 control mainly. He continued to say BLM Plaza will be SHUT DOWN during protest, and depending on any unrest, DC MAY implement a curfew." No time provided in the event of a curfew.
The next 2 days will be cloudy weather, single digit winds, mid 40° temps, no precipitation.
May you all enjoy safe travels. God provides. Just ask. We are excited to be here, and feel Peace, as in THE PRINCE OF.
God Bless and Be Safe.
