Way back in the day, 1965 or so, my family, 3 kids and 2 parents, lived in Spain. We brought a blunderbuss, a long gun with the tip flared out, as a gift for my uncle in Minnesota. I don’t remember the details of the flights, but it wasn’t til the last flight, that anyone said anything about it. We 3 kids, none older than 14, Each took turns carrying the thing around the airports and onto and off of planes. Boarding the last flight, a stewardess objected. Discussion ensued, the captain agrees to hold it in the cockpit for the duration of the flight. Upon landing, he asked my dad if he could buy it from him.

TLDR- as a child in the early 60s, I carried a blunderbuss through airports and on airplanes as hand luggage pretty much unchallenged.
