Yeah but the military's guns are a lot bigger and some of them are mounted on airplanes.

There's also an unmanageably large amount of forest, hills, valleys, rivers, etc and sheer land mass they couldn't possible police / traverse effectively

I'll be generous with ~2mil troops (all branches AC + RC), so the population of columbus, oh roughly (32nd largest MSA).

And not all those troops can fight (planes, tanks require support), even in an emergency scenario

Stuff we already know, but the military would lose if any appreciable amount of the population got involved and the military wanted to keep any amount of infrastructure intact for after the conflict.

Sadly the military is about 50% incompetent at this point. There are so many useless support positions filled with diversity hires at this point.
The bad news is that a large chunk of our military will absolutely side with the government just like we can see with our friends over in many police departments. The good news is most of those people are completely inapt.

Last I heard, the US Army has about 84,000 infantry soldiers. The Marines have about 32,000 infantrymen.

Depending on the estimates you use, there are anywhere from 80 million to 120 million gun owners. If even just 5% of those gun owners took up arms, they'd vastly outnumber all active-duty infantry in the US Armed Forces.

I think I recall hearing that during the Revolutionary war, only something like 3% of Americans fought against the British, and they won.

So? What are they gonna do? Nuke civilians? Military defectors can steal nukes and nuke government buildings and strategic infrastructure/stockpiles but it doesn’t work well the other way around. Guaranteed to have other countries invade to interfere if that’s the case. Same if they use biochemical weapons. What if prison guard defectors just released all the prisoners? Police would be swamped. The government can’t win in an American uprising no matter how you look at it. There would be a lot of deaths and infrastructure loss, but the civilians would win 100%

They can’t bomb us we live amongst them. For them it would be Vietnam scaled up to the size of the United States. I’ll take those odds.

nukes are lame when you have bombs that can set concrete on fire far and away from where they land.

nukes are great area denial if you dont intend to come back for awhile though

Ask yourself -

  1. how many retired military do we have?

  2. how many active duty soldiers would obey an order to fire on their brothers?

Are people waking up to MUH UNIFORM?

They will even attack their own if ordered to...

I remember some of the leaflets we dropped in Iraq.
"Our bombs are so powerful and fast that by the time you see our planes, it will be too late"

Civilian weapons vs. Military hardware? May as well bring a musket. I'd bring mine, but you know, boats and rough waters. . .

Given how many firearms have been produced in garages for the last two hundred years, I'd say it's more like 500 Million firearms in civilian hands.
