Malebolge (circle 8) contains the flatterers and sowers of discord and so on. Their torment is incomprehensible, with the usual fires and pitchforks we normally think of when imagining Hell.
Past them is the bottom, circle 9, reserved for traitors. It’s a giant icy lake, where the condemned are submerged to various degrees. The warmth of God’s light is denied to them. Since they betrayed the trust of people in life, only a dark icy fate can reflect their heart.
