The Vice President has many different options available to him. We only require that the Republican electors be recognized. It doesn't necessarily require picking Trump as president. The VP could also throw out both electoral slates.

If Pence fails Trump his political career is over. He will be forever known as the back stabber traitor.. He and his family will be shunned where ever they go.. He will end up being an uber driver if he is lucky.
