The catholic church "governed" and had a monopoly on academia. Which itself is a cancer that needs to die, cuz just like modern academia, it only stifles original thought. Academia that dictates what can and cannot be studied, and monopolizes who can get funding, was always corrupt.
I'm not Catholic but I'll take Catholic academia over atheist academia any day.

I suppose I was unclear. This modern academia is disgusting. But it doesn't have the power the church did. It can't shut down every thing that goes against it, through the use of force.
It's practices are far more digusting. I'm not defending it at all.
But I'll take a more disgusting criminal with no teeth, over one that's lesser, but does more harm, any day of the week.
Because results matter more than your feelings.
