Highly inaccurate. There have been many landlside victories by 15-20% margins in the last 100 years even. The last one occurred in 84. Reagan won by an 18% margin.

Obviously I'm talking about on average, the parties don't always manage to get the correct candidates or policies they need to win the election.

But that's not the average. That's not even a large landslide in the last 100 years. Here's some more examples of even larger ones.

1920 - Harding won by 26%

1924 - Coolidge won by 25%

1936 - Roosevelt won by 24%

There are a ton of huge landslide victories like this, and many more that are not 51% to 49%. What you said is just flat out wrong.
