If he ran as a Democrat during his last election, he is labeled as a Democrat. He would have to wait until the next election and run as an Independent in order to change his title. Having said that, just because he is a Democrat on paper doesn't mean he ever has to vote with them, although if he's already telling his Senate colleagues to shut up and certify Joe Biden then I wouldn't trust him to vote against his DEMONkkkrat overlords anytime soon.

I think he's talking about switching his party affiliation overall so Dems won't control the senate.
