While emotions are running high, and talk of secession is everywhere, I would like to make a modest proposal. Though it would be lovely to see Texas lead the way and take several states with it to form the New United States, realistically we don't have the numbers of committed pedes in Texas to make it possible. And if it were, we would unleash the horrors of a Civil War 2.0 on ourselves and our posterity.
We need to think differently. We need to think strategically. There is another way.
Puerto Rico.
Let me explain. Puerto Rico is called a "territory" in English, but actually it is an estado libre asociado (freely associated state) according to our Constitution and our 1953 deal with the U.S. Congress. That means we reserved the right to stay what we are, become a state, or declare independence. We do not need Congress' permission to declare independence, only to become a state. There would be no Civil War. This is not true of all the Territories. For example, the USVI next door is not under the same deal.
There are only 2.4 million registered voters in Puerto Rico. Of that number, 14%, including me, voted for independence in the last election. The rest of the electorate is composed about half and half of status-quo PPD voters (who actually would like to see more or total sovereignty) and PNP statehooders (about 36% overall).
In my judgment, half or more of the PDP would vote for independence if they judged it a viable way forward.
As American citizens, you can move here freely and vote in the elections. We need about 1.5 million dedicated pedes to move here and tip the scales. Better yet, 3 to 5 million red-blooded Americans to change the dynamic completely, whip it into shape, and make it America 2.0. As a Puerto Rican, I would naturally be sad to see what happened to Hawaii happen to my culture, but it's a thousand times better than where we are all headed together on the U.S.S. United States.
Please think seriously about my proposal. Puerto Rico has world-class facilities, cheap real estate, a highly educated workforce, and a tremendously strategic military and economic position in the Caribbean. We could be the Singapore of the Caribbean, only without the commies on our doorstep. Let's prepare a lifeboat. If the American dream is to live on, we need to establish a beachhead outside the reach of the godless left and work back from there.
27 members of the Puerto Rican militia volunteered to join Washington at Valley Forge in America's darkest hour, and all died in defense of American liberty. Let's come together again. Launching the lifeboat doesn't mean giving up the ship, but it's a prudent move to be ready for whatever comes next.
Hmmmm
