I saw this in action. went to a tea party rally, crowd was nearly nut to butt on the state house lawn, which was X square meters. attendance estimated by media at X/3. No way anyone but the speaker had 10 square feet to themselves. Using standing room crowd estimates and the dimensions of the lawn, i estimated the crowd (using a same photo fro the article) at something like 8-10 times what the media did. Disinformation is at every turn.

You could divide up the area into density grids and estimate how many people are in the most dense square, then apply that total to all similar densities. Then do it again for the second most dense etc. You sum up these totals as you go down the line to least dense and you'll see a curve forming. This curve will limit out at a very solid estimate of the total number of people; indeed depending on how good your aerial photograph is you can get within a few percentage points of the true number.
Nowadays you can use a radar to give you very accurate density information for grid squares but it's probably overkill in general. Specifically though I'm guessing the military is watching this just for fun and/or training.
I just returned from the Protest. It was windy and cold. I would encourage fresh Troops to continue heading to DC. Cause the front line we sent today is tired hungry and cold. Send reinforcements. It is or was safe as could be. I blessed every family that had kids there to witness history. You are safe there. Go!
