edit: I wasn't aware that Pence had to be impeached and can't be fired, and that a new VP would have to be affirmed by the Senate. However, could the insurrection act offer a shortcut to that process in extremis?

Agreed. Note that there is no "go home" in the 4-step plan outlined above. It can happen while protests continue.
