Don't use body armor itself. Instead, buy AR500 steel rifle targets, and home-make the shell to turn it into a plate carrier.
A: this is far cheaper. You can get large, thick rifle targets that can cover your torso for under a hundred dollars, while purpose-made plates will be way more.
B: rifle targets come in many sizes and shapes, from circles to body contours. If you want to protect more than just your torso, you'll need this.
C: Bulletproof helmets are rare and expensive. However, you can tie a few small rifle targets to a motorcycle helmet, and have pretty good odds of stopping a lucky shot.
The only problem is bullet spalling (IE the shrapnel that splatters when a bullet stops. Bedliner and plastic might get the job done, but I think I'm going to go with a good old fashioned wooden case for mine.
