Clinging to slivers of hope that fighting won't happen or that it'll be easy and you can go home soon is why the soldiers at the end of Vietnam had zero discipline or morale and started chucking frag grenades at their commanding officers.
Soldiers that win wars cling to duty and don't waste their time thinking about whether the prospects are good or bad.
Vietnam was a fucked up test run of many different sour war games and new weapons. Agent Orange still affects the kids of veterans to this day (not spitballing, I know some myself). Americans bought and gave troops guns that were known to be faulty. Lots of fucked up shit.

Which guns were these?
The M16 was rolled out for Vietnam, replacing the M14. supposedly they were faulty, but I wasn’t there and don’t own a rifle so I could be wrong.
