Any pointers for someone who knows nothing about them? Can I just buy one like it's a fancy walkie-talkie? IIRC there's govt regulations on broadcasting on them.

Baofeng UV5R costs $20. Nagoya high-gain antenna costs another $20. Thatโ€™s all the equipment you need to get started. These bands require a ham license to stay within the color of law, if that concerns you.

The UV5R can be programmed for all FRS and GMRS frequencies as well as ham . I have 2. They actually work well for the money.

You're not a ham, are you?

Not that I am saying you're wrong, just that you need to do some research.
