If that's accurate, I'd say President Trump's figure of 250,000 sounds about right. I wasn't there though so I may be way off. But 250,000 on a Wednesday in the cold is pretty damn good if you ask me.
Here's my math. From the intersection I was at, the space between a set of four traffic lights, I would estimate a little under 30 yards by 30 yards.
There was very little open space in the crowd, at times you couldn't even turn sideways.
Easily counted 50 heads in a line side to side, 50 heads back to front. I stopped after 50, could easily have been 60 * 60
So let's say 2500 people in one intersection. Light poles evenly spaced in each direction, 8 each way. We'll even cut one off for density, so just on constitution avenue what I could see with my eyes, 16*2500 is 40k. This doesn't count the population in the ellipse for the event.
Going back in roughly 40 yard increments back to the Washington monument and behind the Washington monument, I can multiply that by roughly 15, that puts it at 600,000. This is what I could lay eyes on.
Considering the walk around after, there were significant crowds beyond 15th and 17th street. 1.2 mil is my maximum claim conservatively. My minimum claim would be maybe 700k
Not that I've heard, but I did find this picture of a digital simulation of what 1 million people would look like - https://s.wsj.net/public/resources/images/BN-KU023_NUMBER_M_20151015165908.jpg
