Last night I was listening to one of those talk radio stations that breaks for the Fox News update every half hour. Over a couple of hours I saw a media narrative being created. Listen to how the reporting on the Capitol Hill event changed in the span of a few hours.
8 PM : "This afternoon an angry group of Trump supporters charged the Capitol building, tearing down fences and breaking windows. One woman died when she was shot by police."
8:30 PM : "This afternoon a mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building, leading to 1 shot by the police and 3 medical emergencies deaths (Ed: That is, heart attacks and such)." Now we were a "mob" and "stormed".
9 PM : "Today a Trump-inspired mob stormed the Capitol building, destroying fences and windows, and leading to 1 person being shot dead by the police and 3 deaths due to medical emergency." Now we were "Trump-inspired"
9:30 PM : "Today an angry Trump-inspired mob stormed the Capitol building, destroying fences and windows, and leading to 4 deaths." Now it looks like we killed 4 people. And we are angry (which is true, but still editorialized)
10 PM (My favorite): "Today an angry group of Trump-inspired marauders invaded the Capitol building, destroying property and leading to 4 deaths". Marauders! I couldn't believe it when I heard this word used in a real news story.
This was the most ridiculous piece of editorialized news reporting I have ever heard. Marauders! I would laugh out loud if it weren't so serious.
