Most modern airliners except for the 787 dreamliner and the A350 have cabin pressures equivalent to an altitude of about 8000ft when they are at cruising altitude. Your taste and smell receptors don't work the same at that altitude as they do at sea level its also why some people get headaches or you often get someone who faints and needs oxygen on long haul flights.

I will note that 2 cars are a necessity if you live outside of the city. They've designed suburbs so that people can have their big houses and properties so nothing is walkable. It's not like the old medieval towns in Europe where the towns were bunched together and everything you needed was located in the center and then people owned property on the outskirts.
I think zoning laws have been used to drive the expansion of house sizes so local governments can collect more property tax. I have spent a lot of time in the US and honestly some of the housing I have seen in the suburbs is frankly a "bit much". Just rows and rows of these McMansions and I was just thinking about the mortgages that must be on some of those properties and the upkeep not to mention how much energy it takes to heat or cool them. In the UK we have had the opposite trend where new houses have gotten tiny because you can make more money putting 4 houses on a plot where 2 would have gone in the 70's but the quality of new builds is horrendous. My uncle was a builder and the last 20 years of his career was putting them right.
Same trend has happened with cars - maybe not as noticeable in the US as in Europe as hatchbacks and saloons have always been smaller and more nimble because of our narrow winding roads but the SUV trend has gone mainstream over here. You have these big heavy SUV's which need quite complex highly tuned engines to move them and they fill them with all sorts of "features" and the costs even of regular hatchbacks are getting out of control - what happens when there is another oil shock and petrol goes to $10 a gallon? People go into debt to buy a lot of them and GM are slapping an American price tag on a Mexican/Chinese product. Most of the "features" in them are superfluous. I'm quite happy with the CD player, a few airbags and air conditioning in my shitty old Corolla.

You know they could serve the best coffee in the world but it would still taste like shit. Most modern airliners except for the 787 dreamliner and the A350 have cabin pressures equivalent to an altitude of about 8000ft when they are at cruising altitude. Your taste and smell receptors don't work the same at that altitude as they do at sea level its also why some people get headaches or you often get someone who faints and needs oxygen on long haul flights.

I think zoning laws have been used to drive the expansion of house sizes so local governments can collect more property tax. I have spent a lot of time in the US and honestly some of the housing I have seen in the suburbs is frankly a "bit much". Just rows and rows of these McMansions and I was just thinking about the mortgages that must be on some of those properties and the upkeep not to mention how much energy it takes to heat or cool them. In the UK we have had the opposite trend where new houses have gotten tiny because you can make more money putting 4 houses on a plot where 2 would have gone in the 70's but the quality of new builds is horrendous. My uncle was a builder and the last 20 years of his career was putting them right.
Same trend has happened with cars - maybe not as noticeable in the US as in Europe as hatchbacks and saloons have always been smaller and more nimble because of our narrow winding roads but the SUV trend has gone mainstream over here. You have these big heavy SUV's which need quite complex highly tuned engines to move them and they fill them with all sorts of "features" and the costs even of regular hatchbacks are getting out of control - what happens when there is another oil shock and petrol goes to $10 a gallon? People go into debt to buy a lot of them and GM are slapping an American price tag on a Mexican/Chinese product. Most of the "features" in them are superfluous. I'm quite happy with the CD player, a few airbags and air conditioning in my shitty old Corolla.

Airlines are under federal jurisdiction, so while airports (which are usually state owned - I'm not aware of any federal airports besides military) may require you to wear a mask as a result of a state or local mandate, airlines are not governed by such mandates.
