encryption is encryption - can be used by both left and right
its open source - ANYONE can check their source code
there were errors in their code - it was found and corrected

Sort of. It works in general, but almost all phones can be remotely hacked by the government. What this means is that your signal text messages will be encrypted end-to-end, where they can't sweep up your discussions en masse and search through it later.

But, if you were a person of interest, they can definitely target you and pull your phone actions before it was encrypted for transfer.

If you were really paranoid, there are open source phones that you can get where everything is open source except for a few drivers (for bt, wifi), and they tend to have physical switches to those components to cut power.

Expensive as fuck, sadly. I guess you could think of it in part as a donation to the cause, but I’m not savvy enough to properly utilize it.

If your friend on the other end can see the encrypted message, so can the nsa.

i guess we're just down to handwritten notes, typewriters and steganography/security-by-obscurity then........
what do you recommend?

One-time pads are unbreakable but there's no messaging app based on that technology. Use Signal and it will likely make mass surveillance difficult.

security by obscurity then - okay...
