Surely there are folks that are just as corrupt and bought as those two who could be manipulated in any way shape, form they desire. Why wouldn't they at least insert believable candidates? The steal wouldn't have looked near as obvious. I just don't get any of it, they aren't that dumb.

They pick the most believable candidates who will agree to the "terms" to get this far. More believable ones backed down somewhere along the way to all the required "terms".
