My History teacher just said that Freedom of Speech (First Amendment) only protects you from censorship by the Government, and not private businesses/companies/conglomerates. Is this true, or not?

That is a very narrow interpretation of the 1st ammendment and one that people love to use to justify massive monopolies shutting down speech of people they dislike. Here is a counter argument: Does that mean companies are in their right to fire employees who express interest in forming a union? Or who speak well of a political candidate the owner of the business dislike?
