Sadly for us, the bread and circuses of the modern age dwarf what was available then, making it exponentially harder. I don't see why it won't continue and get far, far worse.
Yes, sadly you are very right on this. Bread and circuses is something I always tell people about because it is the most basic human nature and can be seen all the way back to ancient Rome and Greece. Today it is so much easier to entertain people and so much easier to feed them and for most folks that is all they truly ask for.
