They were not pretending to be afraid, anyone who thinks that is sadly mistaken. Were they expecting an "incident" they could use for propaganda? Almost certainly. Did they have statements already prepared to that end? Likely. Did they expect them to breach the chambers?

Not a chance. Anyone who has seen real fear in the eyes of another human being cannot believe they were not sincerely afraid.
