It isn't so much about weakening Twitter as it would be about giving his supporters a way to communicate freely. They are trying to cut off the lines of communication.
Trump is basically the only person in the United States who can "beat" social media by driving traffic to an alternative. They don't have to be on equal footing with the big guys either, look at what pre-cuck Drudge Report was to the mainstream media. He by himself on that one site was countering the narrative of the entire mainstream media.
A Trump backed social media alternative would become the what Fox New was once to cable news. This is a battle he can win.

I think you underestimate it actually. He gives people a reason to be there. If people weren’t talking about him and his politics, Twitter’s engagement would drop a hundredfold.

much will have changed. twitter censors the right, it shadowbans and has shown that it is 100% capable and willing of enforcing absolute control. moving to parler removes those protections and makes parler into a vastly more popular platform. will some of the npcs' follow him? yes, but infinitely more supporters will stand with him.
