Is there a way I can block Twitter and other sites like Fox News using my browser or other software to prevent being redirected accidentally to sites I want to completely ignore?

Yes. Look at editing your hosts file.

Does that cause a noticeable lag in browser startup or site access? That's a crazy long list of sites to block!

It actually makes your system faster.

Instead of look to the hosts file, finding nothing and then sending the request to your domain name resolution server and waiting for a response, it looks to the hosts file and finds the address.

you can edit your hosts file and block sites that way.

Here's a list of all of the URLS to block from Facebook.
