For those who don't know, SHA-512 is a cryptographic hash function, and what hash functions do is convert an original input into a unique gobbledygook output.

The function is one way in that you can't directly recreate the original input from the "coded" output.

They're used for message/data verification, and what this means is that Lin's password is apparently truly connected to Kappy.
