I'm still in NYC, where I was born, where I've always been. But I don't recognize the place any more. It's time to go. I have the funds and I can make it happen.

Where can I go? I won't be happy in a rural area where I need to drive half an hour to the nearest tiny town. Are there small or medium-sized cities out there where an ex-New Yorker can be welcomed? Are there places where people like us are gathering?

Am I kidding myself? Is this Germany, 1933, and my family and I should be getting out of Dodge, entirely?

I'm dead serious, pedes. I don't know where to go. We can't stay here. It's not safe and things have already hit the skids, and they're picking up speed every single day.

Poland? Brazil?

More seriously though, there aren't very many good places right now. Maybe Texas or the rural south, but even those are vulnerable.

I've also thought about Hungary. I don't speak Hungarian, though, nor do I know what it would take to emigrate. The country is based as hell, and I like that. And I'm pretty good with languages; I could learn at least basic Hungarian pretty quick if I had to.

Thankfully, English is a lingua franca: a trading language used all over the world. There's a pretty good chance you could survive anywhere in Europe long enough to get lessons for the local tongue.

Texas. Just stay away from the big cities (especially Austin, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Ft Worth).

Florida panhandle, conservative, tropical weather, no state income tax!

Honestly I can second that. I took a trip to PCB in August and pretty much no one was wearing a mask and everything was open. It was a great experience.

Thanks for the tip, and I assume you are referring to Panama City Beach?

I appreciate the names of specific cities, which I will check out during my family's massive road trip this summer.

Yes Panama City Beach! It is one of my favorite vacation spots. I think you and your family will be finding yourself some great options this Summer.

Thank you, fren. I desperately need to feel there's somewhere safe we can go to live our lives.

Thanks for this tip. One advantage of Florida is that there are plenty of expat NYers there (for good or bad), so I wouldn't stick out as That Weirdo From that Awful City.

I love Texas but worry that Californians will turn it purple or blue. Still... I love Texas.

Checkout Florida or Georgia

The BLM riots in Tennessee cities are disturbing. But the state is wonderful and I've never been to Chattanooga, so I'm gonna make a point of visiting it.

That sounds really pleasant. We're planning a long, long road trip across the US to check out possible new hometowns. I took a 2-week vacation driving across TN a few years ago and was really impressed with the beauty and the friendly people. A much more friendly reception than these Yankees got in the deep south, certainly.

I should add that I don't care about marching and protesting. Let people exercise their 1st amendment -- let 'em all march, Commies, Nazis, and any other kind of kook who wants to parade around. Just let them stay peaceful and if they don't, let the cops do their jobs. That's all I ask.
