Needs more users/attention, but for secure communication and file storage I recommend Cyph.
Vpns are useful and will help hide what sites you're visiting from your ISP, but it's not bulletproof armor and you still need to trust the services that you're using.
Also start using Tor Browser, https everywhere, and the no script extension to only allow trusted JS to run.
