This is quite a standard route for a large military craft to take from base to base. The larger and heavier craft will almost always take an out-of-the-way approach to landing at a base in order to keep its path free of resistance. The flight path will often be as straight and narrow as can be.
It's also entirely possible that the navigator simply didn't want them taking that path.
Why did they not fly over Kansas?
Looks like my reply didn't take. Thanks Captcha.
