I think they want to do it just to humiliate him and or possibly open doors for future harassment. They feel that republicans are broken so it's very possible they will get that passed.

That, and they are crafting a narrative about Wednesday as the Worst Thing Ever.

Impeachment magnifies that narrative.

Why the threat of impeachment if you don't resign? Because he still has options! They are trying to force him into making a mistake to avoid "embarrassment" of another stain on his record. (2X impeached!) If they were confident they would just carry on with business as usual and know in 12 days he's gone, but I think they know and this is way more telling than what is being pushed by the media outlets.
