Since we're shuffling off mainstream social media and while Google and Apple app stores are starting to censor as well, I may as well upgrade to a new smartphone. Does anyone have suggestions outside Apple? Is Samsung cucked too?

There is no such thing as a secure phone, PERIOD. I spent a career inside of phones and phone data for a contractor. Any thought there is even a little security is unfounded

I fully expected this response. I guess I'm wondering if there is a lesser of two evils kind of option out there

Technically speaking any mobile phone can be surveilled. If it isn't an iPhone then chances are it is Android based (Sony, Samsung, etc).

If you're worried about that stuff but still need to stay on the Android platform. Better to get an older phone and flash LineageOS or some other maintained custom ROM.

EDIT: Custom ROM won't change much. You just have root / kernel access and no bloatware - vanilla android.

If you're on a phone, you're on a network. Someone controls that network. Ergo, you can always be watched, technically speaking.
