Yes, the free software foundation supports development for Replicant OS, an FSF-endorsed operating system that strips all Goolag stuff from Android.

I would prefer to use a desktop GNU/Linux OS ported over to mobile devices than Android, which is just Linux alone. Also hate how slow Android is compared to even iOS.

See comparison in boot times between an Android phone and Purism's GNU/Linux phone. It blows the other two out of the water...

Also fun, watch how much data an iphone and Android devices phone home while inactive...

Haven't heard of Librem 5. Sounds interesting.

Yes, I have been paying attention to this product for the last year or so.

The company, Purism, took donations of $1 million or so on Kickstarter to try and design their own phone from the ground up. I'm talking their own GNU/Linux operating system (just like a Linux desktop OS), schematics, phone case etc. They've had a lot of delays. Their initial "beta" sort of release was met with underwhelming enthusiasm.

The phone's battery ran out of charge pretty fast because of a design issue with their CPU dissipating lots of heat or something else. It will take them time, but hopefully it can work out. Lots of their backers on reddit complained about the long wait times. Some thing Purism's phone play has been a scheme, but only time will tell. They did at least deliver real hardware to people.

To be fair, making tech is insanely hard. To really rival large companies, we need something like decentralized tech.

Yup, it is really hard. But remember, Crapple and Goolag are publicly traded companies.

Anyone without enough know-how can start a publicly traded company and issue shares to raise money to design an open phone. Qualcomm, which makes cellular modems won't release the source code to their firmware, so all smartphones are basically potential spying machines.

Purism had to electrically isolate the cellular modem from the CPU because of that. Like the Pinephone, the Librem 5 offers kill switches to cut off electrical power to the phone's camera, microphone, cellular and wifi. But purism's switches are on the sides. Unfortunately you can't easily remove the battery on either phone.
