America is more than just a giant patch of land. It's more than wealth. It's most certainly more than its politicians.
America is founded upon powerful and true principles: that all men are fundamentally equal, and equally flawed. That if we cannot have Utopia then at least we can have Justice. That prosperity and dignity arise from virtue. That man needs no king but Jesus. That might does not make right, though might can be used to restore right.
These things are worth salvaging. Therefore, we must try.
What will it require? I don't know. None of us really knows. But I'm going to quote a greater American than most of us will ever meet:
"It does require our best effort, our work and our willingness to believe in ourselves and in our capacity to perform great deeds; that together and with God's help we can and will resolve the problems which confront us. Why shouldn't we believe that? After all - we are Americans."
Forty years later, let's continue to justify Reagan's confidence.
